Going through a divorce? Remember self-care

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2019 | Divorce

Whether or not the divorce is amicable, it can still create a significant amount of stress in someone’s life.

It is easy for that stress and the divorce itself to take all of someone’s attention and energy. After all, a divorce involves many complex details and decisions about one’s future.

However, individuals must remember to take care of themselves during this time. Here are a few helpful self-care tips for individuals navigating divorce.

1. Create a new routine to find your new normal

A divorce can change someone’s life drastically. They may no longer live in the same place or engage in the same activities they did with their family. In this time of considerable change, it can be helpful for individuals to establish a routine they can rely on. For example, they can:

  • Make a weekly schedule, including when they will grocery shop and clean;
  • Follow an exercise regime and a healthy diet, which can help to significantly reduce stress and anxiety; and
  • Make time for a favorite hobby.

This routine can be as specific or as flexible as individuals need. The purpose is only to create a new sense of normalcy in their life during a divorce.

2. Spend time with loved ones

Humans are naturally social creatures. Therefore, as much as individuals might want to be alone, it is beneficial if they spend quality time and connect with their loved ones, including:

  • Their children;
  • Their friends; and
  • Other family members.

Spending time with loved ones is another way individuals can find their new normal and ensure they maintain a healthy work-life balance during this stressful time.

3. Rest

On top of our already busy lives, a divorce can create many worries about the future. And ensuring all of the paperwork and details are handled properly can make our lives seem even busier.

That is why individuals must find time to rest. This can include:

  • Ensuring they get enough sleep each night; and
  • Dedicating some time to relax during each day.

Both of these are necessary to renew energy and reduce stress.
