Yes, You Can (Probably) Visit Your Child at School

By: Britney McPheron, associate attorney at Bowen Ten Cardani

Back to school often means back to the typical custody schedule for a lot of parents whose children don't live with them during the academic year. With work, school, extracurriculars, and life getting in the way, sometimes an every other weekend schedule just isn't enough.

Have you considered visiting your child at school during the academic day? Some parents are unaware of this, but absent a court order specifically instructing that a parent is not to visit their child at school, there is no ban against doing so. Having lunch with your child at school or volunteering to be a parent helper in their classroom can be a great way to spend more time with your child during the school year. Visiting your child at school allows you to be introduced to their teachers, friends, and other parents. You can also see their classroom and projects. Most children are proud when their parents come to visit them during the day and excited to show them around. After your visit, you will have more things to talk about with your child.

Of course, be sure to check with the school prior to any visit. You want to be sure you're aware of and following all school procedures. If the school approves of your visit, take advantage of this opportunity to spend more time with your child. Absent a court order or school policy prohibiting it, you can visit your child at school.
