The different ways to get divorced

Just as there's more than one way to bake a pie, there's more than one way to get divorced. For instance, a couple in Virginia could choose to discuss matters among themselves and deal accordingly. If the couple is going through an acrimonious breakup, they could go to court and have a judge settle matters. Simply put, the spouses could figure out the details of the separation either on their own or with the help of a third party.

When couples can agree on all the details together, fill in the paperwork and file for divorce, this is called a DIY divorce. These divorces can sometimes be completed within a few months. Unfortunately, DIY divorces can be difficult even for spouses who are on good terms. When this is the case, it is a good idea to bring in lawyers to negotiate and come up with a settlement.

Alternatively, divorces that require the involvement of a third party can take one of three forms: There is mediation, arbitration and going to court. Mediation takes place when the couple still wants to solve things together, but they need a professional, such as a therapist, to help them communicate better. In the case of arbitration, both parties agree to let an impartial third party make all the decisions for both of them. Going to court, which can be the most costly, means letting a judge make decisions.

Obviously, which path to go down is a decision that is unique to every couple and their circumstances. Therefore, it's advisable to reach out to an experienced lawyer who can help soon-to-be ex-spouses figure what option best suits their needs.
